If you’ve cancelled Foxtel or you’re thinking about it, there’s a good chance the satellite dish is still sitting on your roof doing nothing. It’s one of those things people forget about once the subscription’s gone, and it’s worth knowing what your options actually are, especially with the direction Foxtel itself has been heading lately.

Foxtel is moving away from satellite

Foxtel has been quietly shifting its focus away from residential satellite service. Rather than sending a technician out to fix a satellite fault, Foxtel now generally directs customers to connect their set-top box to the internet instead. Combined with the consolidation of their streaming apps into BINGE, the direction is clear, Foxtel’s future is built around internet delivery, not satellite dishes on rooftops.

For existing satellite customers, this means ongoing support for the old satellite setup is only getting harder to come by. If your dish or receiver develops a fault, don’t be surprised if the response is a suggestion to switch to streaming rather than a repair.

What do you do with the dish?

Once you’ve cancelled Foxtel, the satellite dish and associated cabling generally has no further use for their original purpose. A few options from here:

Have it removed. Most people don’t love having an unused dish sitting on the roof indefinitely, it’s an eyesore, and depending on your roof type it’s an unnecessary penetration point that can become a source of leaks over time if it’s not properly maintained.

For properties with solid existing infrastructure, there’s often no need to change anything.

When Starlink makes more sense

Starlink comes into its own where NBN struggles or simply isn’t available. That includes rural and semi-rural properties out of range for decent fixed line or fixed wireless connections, areas where NBN speeds are inconsistent due to distance from the node, and newer developments where infrastructure hasn’t caught up yet. What Actually Happens on the Day

We use thermal imaging to see inside your walls before anything goes up — so we can avoid internal wiring or plumbing and anchor the mount to the most stable points. This is something DIY installs skip entirely and it’s one of the main reasons professional mounting is worth doing properly.

Once the wall is assessed we confirm with you exactly where the TV is going. Getting the height right matters — too high and you’re craning your neck, too low and it defeats the purpose. Once that’s confirmed we fit the wall plate, run the cables, hang the TV and make sure everything is level and secure before we leave.

No — we supply the mount as part of the job. If you’ve already bought one that’s fine too, we’ll use yours. Just let us know when you book. If you’re not sure which type suits your space we’ll recommend the right one when we assess the wall.

One of the most common questions we get asked is how much internet speed someone actually needs. It’s easy to assume faster is always better and pay for the biggest plan available, but for a lot of homes that’s money spent on speed you’ll never use. Here’s a straightforward breakdown so you can work out what’s right for your household or business without overpaying.

First — Speed vs Reliability

Before we talk numbers, it’s worth understanding that raw speed isn’t the whole story. A connection that’s “fast” on paper but drops out, lags during peak hours or has terrible WiFi coverage will feel slower than a modest connection that’s rock solid.

As a rough guide, count the number of people in your home who use the internet heavily at the same time and allow around 25 Mbps each for comfortable 4K streaming and video calls. NBN vs Starlink in Regional Queensland — Which is Better for Darling Downs Properties?

If you live or run a business in regional Queensland, you’ve probably asked yourself at some point whether Starlink is worth switching to. NBN has been around for years now and for a lot of people in the Darling Downs and surrounding regions it’s been a mixed experience. Starlink has changed the conversation significantly. Here’s an honest breakdown of both options so you can decide what’s right for your situation.

The Reality of NBN in Regional Queensland

NBN works well for a lot of people — particularly those in built up areas of Toowoomba where fibre to the premises or fibre to the node is available. But once you get outside the main urban areas the story changes quickly.

A significant portion of properties across the Darling Downs, Lockyer Valley, Southern Downs and Western Downs are on Fixed Wireless or Sky Muster satellite NBN. Fixed Wireless can be decent in some areas but it’s heavily congested in others, particularly during peak evening hours. Sky Muster has improved over the years but it still comes with data limits, higher latency and speeds that don’t come close to what’s available in the city.

For rural and semi-rural properties the honest truth is that NBN was never really designed with them in mind. The rollout prioritised urban and suburban areas and many regional properties were left with whatever solution was cheapest to deploy, not whatever was best for the customer.

What Starlink Actually Delivers

Starlink is SpaceX’s low Earth orbit satellite internet service. Unlike traditional satellite internet which uses geostationary satellites sitting around 36,000km above Earth, Starlink’s satellites orbit at around 550km. That proximity is what makes the difference — it dramatically reduces latency and allows for much faster speeds.

In practice, most Starlink customers in regional Queensland are seeing download speeds of 100-200Mbps with latency around 20-40ms. That’s fast enough for streaming, video calls, working from home and running a business comfortably. It’s not quite fibre-to-the-premises fast but for most regional households and businesses it’s more than enough.

What Starlink is Good For

Properties where NBN options are limited or unreliable
Rural and acreage properties where fixed line infrastructure doesn’t reach
Businesses that need reliable connectivity regardless of location
Anyone currently on Fixed Wireless with congestion issues during peak hours
Properties that need consistent upload speeds for cloud backups or video calls

NBN vs Starlink — Head to Head

Speed

On a good fixed line NBN connection (FTTP or FTTN) you’ll often get faster peak speeds than Starlink. But on Fixed Wireless or Sky Muster NBN, Starlink wins comfortably. For most regional Queensland properties comparing like for like, Starlink is faster and more consistent.

Reliability

Starlink can be affected by heavy rain and obstructions but has improved significantly since launch. Fixed Wireless NBN can suffer from congestion during peak hours. Sky Muster NBN has data limits and latency issues. In our experience installing both across the Darling Downs, Starlink is generally the more reliable option for rural and semi-rural customers.

Cost

Starlink hardware costs around $599 upfront for the dish and router, plus a monthly plan starting from around $139/month for the residential service. NBN plans vary but comparable speeds on fixed line NBN are generally cheaper on a monthly basis once you’re past the hardware cost. However if you’re on Sky Muster NBN with data limits, Starlink often works out similar or cheaper once you factor in the value of unlimited data and faster speeds.

Latency

For general browsing and streaming latency doesn’t matter much. For video calls, online gaming and real-time applications it matters a lot. Starlink’s latency of 20-40ms is dramatically better than Sky Muster’s 600ms+ and competitive with fixed line NBN. If latency matters for your use case Starlink is the clear winner over satellite NBN.

Availability

NBN is available almost everywhere in Australia in some form. Starlink is available across most of regional Queensland and coverage continues to improve. If you’re in a very remote location Starlink may actually be your only viable high speed option.

Our Recommendation for Darling Downs Properties

If you’re in Toowoomba city on a decent fixed line NBN connection there’s probably not a compelling reason to switch to Starlink unless you’re having reliability issues. The monthly cost is higher and the speeds are comparable.

If you’re on Fixed Wireless NBN and experiencing congestion or speed issues, Starlink is worth a serious look. The upfront hardware cost is the main barrier but many customers find the improvement in reliability and speed worth it.

If you’re on Sky Muster satellite NBN or you’re in an area with no fixed line NBN, Starlink is almost certainly the better option. The speed, latency and unlimited data make it a significant upgrade for most rural Queensland households and businesses.
