Since Starlink uses a network of low orbit satellites rather than ground infrastructure, it sidesteps a lot of the issues that come with distance based connections.

In areas with poor NBN coverage, Starlink often delivers noticeably faster and more consistent speeds. In areas with strong NBN infrastructure already in place, the two are more comparable, and NBN’s lower cost usually makes it the more practical choice. What Internet Speed Do I Actually Need?

One of the most common questions we get asked is how much internet speed someone actually needs. It’s easy to assume faster is always better and pay for the biggest plan available, but for a lot of homes that’s money spent on speed you’ll never use. Here’s a straightforward breakdown so you can work out what’s right for your household or business without overpaying.

First — Speed vs Reliability

Before we talk numbers, it’s worth understanding that raw speed isn’t the whole story. A connection that’s “fast” on paper but drops out, lags during peak hours or has terrible WiFi coverage will feel slower than a modest connection that’s rock solid.

For most people the real frustration isn’t the plan speed — it’s WiFi dead spots, congestion in the evenings or an old router that can’t keep up. We’ll come back to that, because it’s often the actual problem.

Understanding Download vs Upload

Internet speeds are measured in megabits per second (Mbps) and come in two parts:
