When NBN is still the better option
If you’re in a well serviced area with access to NBN Fibre to the Premises, NBN is generally going to be cheaper and just as reliable as Starlink for everyday use. It doesn’t need a clear view of the sky, isn’t affected by weather in the same way, and monthly plans are typically more affordable once you’re set up. For properties with solid existing infrastructure, there’s often no need to change anything.
When Starlink makes more sense
Starlink comes into its own where NBN struggles or simply isn’t available. That includes rural and semi-rural properties out of range for decent fixed line or fixed wireless connections, areas where NBN speeds are inconsistent due to distance from the node, and newer developments where infrastructure hasn’t caught up yet. Since Starlink uses a network of low orbit satellites rather than ground infrastructure, it sidesteps a lot of the issues that come with distance based connections.
Speed and reliability
In areas with poor NBN coverage, Starlink often delivers noticeably faster and more consistent speeds. In areas with strong NBN infrastructure already in place, the two are more comparable, and NBN’s lower cost usually makes it the more practical choice. Weather can affect Starlink’s performance more than a wired NBN connection, though this has continued to improve as the network has expanded.
Installation and setup
Starlink needs a clear, unobstructed view of the sky to maintain a strong signal, which means the dish has to be mounted somewhere elevated and free of obstructions like trees or nearby buildings. NBN installation depends on what’s already run to the property, sometimes straightforward, sometimes requiring more work if fibre hasn’t been connected to the premises yet.
So which one should you choose
If you’re getting solid NBN speeds where you are, there’s rarely a reason to switch. If you’re dealing with dropouts, slow speeds, or you’re simply out of range, Starlink is usually the better fit. The honest answer is it comes down to your specific property, and that’s something worth actually checking rather than guessing at.
