If your TV keeps pixelating, dropping out or showing no signal at all, you’re probably wondering whether you need a new antenna or whether a signal booster will fix the problem. It’s one of the most common questions we get asked and the honest answer is it depends on what’s actually causing the issue. Here’s how to tell the difference.
Signs You Probably Need a New Antenna
Antennas don’t last forever. Most quality antennas have a lifespan of around 10-15 years but cheaper ones can start deteriorating much sooner, especially in Queensland where UV, heat and storms take a toll. Here are the signs yours might be on the way out.
Your picture breaks up in dry, clear weather
If your signal drops out even on a perfect day with no wind or rain, the problem is almost certainly your antenna or the cabling rather than reception in your area. A healthy antenna should give you a solid signal in good weather conditions.
You can see physical damage
Have a look at your antenna from the ground. Bent or broken elements, corrosion, a tilted mounting or an antenna that’s pointing the wrong direction after a storm are all signs it needs replacing. A damaged antenna won’t be fixed by a booster — you need a new one.
Your antenna is more than 10-15 years old
If you’re not sure when your antenna was last replaced and your house is more than 10 years old, there’s a good chance it’s original. Older antennas weren’t designed for the current digital TV signal and an upgrade will often make a significant difference to your picture quality.
You’re missing channels entirely
If you’re doing a channel scan and certain channels aren’t coming up at all, or some channels work fine while others don’t, it’s often a sign the antenna isn’t picking up the full signal range. A new antenna designed for the current digital broadcast frequencies will usually fix this.
The cabling is old or damaged
Sometimes it’s not the antenna itself but the coaxial cable running from the antenna to your TV points that’s causing the problem. Old, cracked or poorly terminated cabling can cause signal loss just as much as a failing antenna. We check both when we come out.
When a Signal Booster Will Help
A signal booster amplifies the signal coming from your antenna and distributes it to multiple TV points in your home. They’re useful in specific situations but they’re not a fix for everything and putting a booster on a bad signal often just amplifies the problem rather than solving it.
A booster is likely to help when:
- Your antenna is in good condition but the signal is weak in your area
- You have multiple TVs in the house and the signal is being split too many ways
- You’re getting a good signal on one TV but poor signal on TVs further from the antenna
- You’ve recently added extra TV points and the signal has dropped on existing ones
A booster is unlikely to help when:
- Your antenna is old or damaged — fix the source first
- The cabling is faulty — a booster will just amplify the interference
- The signal in your area is genuinely too weak — you may need a higher gain antenna or a different antenna position
