Can You Move Your NBN Box? What’s Actually Involved

It’s a common situation, the NBN box got installed wherever was easiest at the time, often a cupboard, a garage, or some out of the way spot that made sense during the original install but isn’t so convenient now. Whether you’re renovating, tidying up a cluttered cupboard, or just want easier access to your equipment, moving an NBN box is a job we get asked about fairly often. Here’s what’s actually involved.

It’s not just unplugging and moving it

The NBN box (technically the NTD, or Network Termination Device) is connected to the fibre or cabling that runs into your property, it’s not simply a matter of unplugging it and plugging it back in somewhere else. Moving it properly means extending or re-running the connection to the new location, and making sure the cabling is terminated correctly so the connection keeps working exactly as it should.

What we check before moving it

Before relocating an NBN box, we look at a few things: what type of NBN connection you’re on (this affects what’s actually possible and how the job’s approached), how far the new location is from the existing cabling, and whether the new spot has power and enough space for the box and router to sit properly, with decent airflow rather than being crammed into a tight cupboard.

Tidying up the whole setup while we’re there

A lot of the time, the NBN box isn’t the only thing crammed into an awkward cupboard, old alarm panels, routers, tangled cabling, and leftover gear from previous setups often end up in the same spot. If you’re having the NBN box moved, it’s often worth having the whole area cleaned up at the same time, proper cable management, removing anything that’s no longer in use, and setting the space up so it’s actually easy to access if you ever need to check or reset something down the track.

Do you need an NBN-accredited technician

Some parts of this job, particularly anything involving the NBN connection itself, need to be carried out by a technician accredited to work on NBN infrastructure. We handle this properly rather than leaving you with a DIY job that risks losing your connection altogether or voiding any warranty on the equipment.

Worth getting done properly

Moving an NBN box isn’t a huge job, but it’s one that’s easy to get wrong if it’s not done properly, a loose connection or incorrect termination can mean intermittent dropouts that are hard to diagnose after the fact. If you’re renovating, decluttering, or just want your setup somewhere more sensible, it’s worth having it done right the first time.
